Just wondering what the mood has been up there concerning the tariffs. I know companies here in the midlands getting hit. Have the tax cuts offset them basically?
I wouldn't expect a massive immediate downturn right away. Shifting manufacturing, especially of something like a car, to another country takes time.
Given the current state of the economy I wouldn't be a concerned as much about current jobs as it is about future investment. When a company is looking to setup or expand shop, a tariff is a big con. Whether its a big enough con to get the company go else where is the big question. If economy takes a downward spiral then all bets are off and tariffs could likely make things worse.
Yes for my company. We are in the energy business and this hitting us very hard. To move suppliers for our parts take years so we are having to eat most of the cost. It’s brought up daily at work and I work with a lot of republicans.
Volvo has also just announced they no longer plan to export to China from their new factory in the Charleston area. Instead they'll focus on domestic production. This presumably will mean fewer jobs because of lower production. They're making a sedan there that has relatively low demand in the US but higher demand in China.
