While we aren't in need of a regular multiplex cinema, I would argue that there certainly would be a market for a dine-in brewpub movie theater like Alamo Drafthouse. That absolutely would thrive in this market.

Pelham Rd 10, I think would still be open and doing great today if it had been built just a few years later.

it would likely have been a 16 screen theater, and would have been built with the stadium seating and digital projection which is my opinion on why it closed to start with.

It would be doing great today if it did not close.

It closed in '04, right?
That area wasn't as nearly as developed as it is now.

2001 if I recall. Opened in 1995-ish. Somewhere we have a topic where we nailed the dates down.

The sign remained far, far longer than the theater.

I don't know for a fact if the theater, as it was, would be doing great.. First, it was installed with traditional film projectors. Again, a product of unfortunate timing. had it been built a few years later, it would have been built with digital projectors and the decision on whether to upgrade or not wouldn't have been an issue.

It also was built with offset, but not stadium seating. Sightlines were fine, but by the early 2000's, stadium seating was all the rage.

It was, however, a very cool looking theater. Lots of chrome and neon that was used very well to give it a 50's feel.

I think of those two things as being the killers of the theater. If it had those.. I believe it would have withstood the opening of Cherrydale and Hollywood 20.

Nothing was going to save either Wade Hampton or Haywood Rd (Not the one across from the mall).. Movies by the Mall.. That's tougher. It was pretty nasty and rundown.. But a movie for a buck.. I doubt they could have gotten the digital projectors, so.. Odds are it was doomed as well.

Camelot, honestly, I'm surprised at.. It has a great owner which is why it's made it. That's a bad location overall, but it's one of my favorite theaters to go to. Such a beautiful classic 60's to 70's style theater that's been updated just enough to modernize it while keeping the classic touches.

You are correct. Pelham 10 lasted from 1993-2001 according to this recent article. I'm pretty sure it was a Regal Theater from start to finish and the Hollywood 20 under construction was intended to be a Cobb Theater based in Alabama.

I believe Regal acquired Cobb just before or slightly after Hollywood 20@Greenville Mall opened around 1997. Regal probably just gave up on Pelham 10 with their new mega theater (HW20) with stadium seating one exit down.

Yes, I know Pelham was Regal from the start.. It was the first Regal theater in Greenville that I am aware of. I did not know that Hollywood 20 was not Regal from the start.. Was Cherrydale? If not.. Then Regal bought ALL the theaters.. Because Simpsonville was originally Great Escape when it opened, for the first year or so, and I thought it was better under Great Escape.

Everything I've read out there indicates the Cherrydale was the downfall of the cinema. Interesting that Regal would just let Pelham go like that.
