First, how did names of streets in an around downtown Greenville get their names: were they names for the developer or did the city name them after someone important? For example:

Mordecai Street downtown
Calvin Street downtown
Vivian Street downtown
McBee Avenue downtown (isn’t the correct pronunciation MAC’bee?)

Cleveland Street
McDaniel Avenue
Belmont Avenue (I assume that the name is “pretty mountain”, as it leads up to a hill where a beautiful Lanneau-Norwood Victorian house is)

Also, downtown has a wide strip of land, between Spring Street and Church Street, that is largely parking lots (or new buildings recently built). This indicates that what was there before wasn’t particularly valuable real estate (as if it had been valuable real estate, it would have had nice buildings on it). 60-75 years ago, what was on this strip: low-grade commercial buildings or railroad tracks and the like? (I asked a few elderly family members this question and they didn’t know, indicating that they didn’t spend much time in that area, which also suggests that it wasn’t a prime commercial area.)

Thanks.
