Looking to funeral pre-arrangements and received a quote for almost 17,000 for a simple burial. Service side is about 6K and the plot etc comes to about 12K, simple marker etc.

Is this a normal price for a very very simple burial?

It was quite a shocker but I wanted to get some input.

Mortuary’s are a ripoff. They are taking advantage of families in a time of great need. I am going the cremation route. I told my wife to put my ashes in a tupperware container and spread them in the backyard.

Thats about what Moms cost a couple of years ago. She had insurance, and covered most of it IIRC.

My family member had already purchased their plot years ago near family but when they passed the marker was 6,000 alone for a double (him and wife) and that was 4 years ago. Single markers were 3,000 at the time. I think it was $1200 for the opening and closing of the grave. I think the funeral home charges were between 15-20K but that included a service at the funeral home chapel if I'm not mistaken.

My dad was cremated. We paid $3500 for the whole thing including a service at the funeral home.

I am going aquamation myself, it's a greener alternative as far as the process goes, although it's still just dust left behind. Much cheaper than a funeral in any case, and I don't want a service; I want a party at our local bar

My parents both chose to be cremated via Neptune Society and my wife and I paid some $6800 each a few years back to become a member for care.
They handle everything from pickup of the remains to disposal almost any way you want it. Many options too. In my parents case they chose to have their ashes scattered at sea in the Pacific via an airplane. They both loved to fish.
Just make a simple call and they do it all.
By the time out time has come we don't need to be taking up any space here and relatives are not really noted for visiting the internment site anyway after a short time goes by.
