I think it started back in the Video Poker days.

You had many casino looking places with the video poker machines... That's when I first started hearing the term, and.. Logical that's where it would have stemmed from.

I have lived in Greenville my entire life of 66 years. I have never heard that term used for Greenville.

That was all over the state though. Even in Greenwood.

We used to call it Gvegas in the mid 90's when we played video poker all the time. Never heard it called Green Vegas till years later, but sparingly. Still sad it was taken away from us

Interesting.. I remember the video poker moniker as well.. then it seemed that some tried to pivot from that and focus on the growth of the City/area was similar to that of a little vegas with some much development and transplants... I guess that is a good pivot for some but not for all

It may also be better than "what happens in Greenville, stays in Greenville" that may not be good for tourism...LOL

I think we came out better with the 'foodie town' rep than the gambling town rep.
