I usually take I-26 to Charleston. Then I-526 North to US-17N. Then north to Georgetown/Pawleys Island. This route has worked well for me in the past. You can bypass most of the traffic in Charleston using I-526 to US-17N.

That was one of the options but the most popular seems to go through Florence. We tried that the first/last time we went and I'm not sure that it is the best way since we stay in Pawley's. We usually go down on Sunday so traffic isn't much of an issue unless you come into Myrtle directly, I think.

Take 385 to I26. As you get close to Orangeburg jump on 301 to Santee. Take this to I95. You will take I95 North to the Manning 501 exit. Stay on US 521 all the way. There is a fairly new bypass around Andrews (speed trap).
The problem with the 376 towards Sumter way is that you end up going thru some small towns before Manning (Wedgefield, Pinewood) on 2 lane roads that are 45 mph at many points.

I am originally from Georgetown. I also use to live in the upstate and travel from Greenville area to Georgetown frequently. The above route is probably the best route. You do go through a few small towns but it is still quicker than going to Charleston and hit 17 or going through Florence. From Greenville It will take you probably 4-4.5 hrs to Georgetown.
The roads are not 4 lane all the way but last time I made that trip it was not a problem.
