Our family is relocating from Reading, PA to the Greenville area in April. We are considering having a house built. We are over the basement shock, and are considering McCar Builders, Poinsette Homes and Ryan Homes. We are tring to figure out the advantages/disadvantages to crawl space vs. slab. So many questions...does anyone have any experience with any of these situations?
I grew up in houses built over a basement or crawl space, and have spent the last 26 years living on a slab. A slab has one advantage- cheap to build. Another plus is that you can put tile down anywhere and it won't crack. But I'll never have a slab again (if I can help it) b/c they are cold, hard on your feet and back (and anything breakable), and it is difficult to repair or alter plumbing and wiring. If you want to move pipes to re-model a bathroom, you may have to cut up the concrete, move the pipes, then patch the concrete. Much easier to walk down in the basement, or even to crawl through a crawlspace. What do you mean by 'basement shock'? The cost? Some areas are not suitable for a basement even if you wanted one and could afford one. Our lot in the upstate is sloping, so we plan on having a walk-out basement. If we can't afford that, it will be a crawl space. Make sure that you specify (and get) appropriate vapor barriers for the foundation you choose.
Thanks for the crawl space/slab reference. The "basement shock" I'm refering to is here is PA basements are just standard, so we finish them or use them for staorage, or both. To get a basement in SC in new construction, there is usually a lot premium (10,000-15,000) along with the price for a basment
(25,000-40,000) and that is all before you finish it in any way.
