2007 stats are the latest from the FBI which are available, and they show SC as the most violent state.

Hopefully, when 2008 stats are compiled ALL states including SC will have reduced violent crime rates, and SC will not be the most violent.

Violent crime rates, like all crime rates, are calculated per capita.

And LA is the second largest MSA in the US, but still less violent, per capita, than either Sumter, or Florence S.C.

"A fact's a fact", as Midnight Oil once sang.

L..A has more people in the city than we have i the state but given a choice of driving through east L.A, Compton ,or Southeast D.C i'll take my chances with Florence S.C any day....when i go to L.a. i always have to be mindful of the neighborhood i am going through you really don't want to get caught in the wrong neighborhood with a red or blue hat on.....easy way to die...

"I know it sounds weird, but it is a different kind of crime. Alot of them are domestic abuse, and the other ones are crimes against people they know. There are actually very few crimes against random people. It does not make it ok, but most crime happens between acquaintances. Its a great place to live, I would not say it if I did not mean it. "

You are exactly right, and SC can be a very good place to live. Voluntary segregation allows people to comfortably work together but live apart, and that is a good thing because it keeps crime among groups where that is a voluntary and accepted part of life.

If your neighborhood turns bad, you just sell out and move elsewhere. There is absolutely nothing you can do to change this situation, but you can know it exists so you can plan to live accordingly. Just stay in the country and avoid poor and "dark" neighborhoods. There are plenty of nice areas in both Sumter and Florence.
