Possibly relocating to the Simpsonville/Greenville area. Wondering what there is to do for recreation in the area in terms of boating, swimming etc. Its a toss up for us between this area or Mt. Pleasant, Sc. Any help would be great, thanks.

Others here can give you better suggestions than I can, but there is plenty to do in Greenville. The suburbs on the East side (of which Simpsonville is one) have a lot to offer.

For what it's worth, I have lived in both Greenville and Charleston and can tell you that Greenville is the much better place to call home. It's not even close.

Greenville:

Near the mountains (which make for a great backdrop even if you don't go)
Better economy (due to more industry and less tourism)
Cleaner
Lower cost of living
Less poverty (it's also not as "in your face" as it is in Charleston)
Less crime
Fewer traffic problems
Smells better (Charleston stinks sometimes)
Doesn't flood (it doesn't take much rain for downtown Charleston to flood)
No threat of hurricanes (or any other natural disasters, really)
Four seasons (Charleston doesn't have as clearly defined seasons)
Fall colors (Charleston doesn't have the leaf color like the Upstate does)

Much about the two metros are similar - size, friendliness of people, etc. Charleston might have a few more well-known restaurants, but Greenville has some excellent ones in its own right. It's going to cost more to live in Charleston, and insurance will cost more too. Quality of life is higher in Greenville though, and that's what it comes down to for me.

But that's just my opinion. You will find people who love Charleston and prefer it over Greenville. Visit both places if you haven't already and decide for yourself. I think you'll prefer Greenville, though.

It's all in what you are looking for. I used to live in the Greenville area but now live in Summerville and really enjoy it here. There are good things about both areas.

Since the OP mentioned lakes and boating, I'll suggest looking more towards Easley, Powdersville, etc. Although there are some small lakes in the immediate Greenville area, the real gems are Hartwell, Keowee, and Jocassee. These are deep, mountain fed lakes with much clearer and cooler water. Jocassee even has a waterfall that drops directly into the lake. I believe they are about 45 miles or so from Greenville. If nothing else, they are a nice weekend destination within an hour of downtown. There are also countless hiking destinations all along Hwy 11, including many beautiful waterfalls. Also, having lived under the threat of hurricanes for many years in FL, I've lost my taste for living along the coast. You might want to check homeowner's insurance rates for the coastal areas compared to inland.
