Hi! My husband just got a job in the Clemson area and we'll be relocating to that area in September. I've never been there and have been researching the area, but I sure would like some locals' input.

We both grew up in the country and are not interested in living in a bustling town. We don't care if we're close to fine dining/movie theatres/Walmarts. Our ideal would be to live on the outskirts of a small community - not right downtown, but close enough to where we wouldn't be isolated and we'd be able to make friends! I'd love to be within 20 minutes of a YMCA, and my husband doesn't want to commute more than 30 minutes to Clemson. We're outdoorsy, so it looks like any little towns in that area would serve! I'm interested in things like knitting and gardening clubs, maybe some crafting circles! We're in our late 30s.

We're looking for an old-fashioned house on 2+ acres, doesn't have to be by one of the lakes. Looking for a close-knit community with low crime and welcoming people!

Can anyone give me the scoop? Specifically, we're looking at Walhalla, Seneca, Clemson, and maybe the outskirts of Anderson. Of course, we're open to all suggestions!

Thanks so much!

You should check out Patrick Square, a new community within Clemson that is a TND neighborhood with a lot amenities and variety. I'm not sure if it has lots that large though.

Welcome to Patrick Square

Anywhere between Anderson and Pendleton would be right up your alley. Anderson has one of the nicest YMCA's in the country.

Thanks so much for the advice! I don't think Patrick Square is quite what we're looking for - we definitely want more land and an older home with a unique personality. We've found a few things we liked around the Seneca/Pendleton area, but nothing that's really knocked our socks off. We've actually found some REALLY cool, unique homes around Walhalla, but I'm worried that Walhalla is maybe a bit too isolated...I've read that there's not much going on there (not that we need much, we like the outdoors or playing board games at home!)...can anyone give some advice about that area? My husband isn't crazy about a 30 minute commute (Walhalla ---> Clemson) but is willing for the right house...but I don't really mind driving 25 minutes to the Seneca YMCA...but I don't want to have to drive an hour roundtrip to go to a grocery store, a movie, etc.

You are probably going to have to come and look to really know which communities are going to fit you.

Walhalla is pretty small but does have a grocery store. Lots of homes will have a Walhalla address that aren't really close to Walhalla, though. To get the acerage you want you may need to look at homes not really "in" any town. There are lots of places out in the country that wouldn't really be all that isolated. Homes around Clemson, Central, Pendleton, Seneca, Westminster, and Liberty would all be close enough to Clemson to not be a bad drive.

Clemson used to have a YMCA but I don't know if they still do or not. The University does have a lot of athletic facilities that faculty and their families can use for a fee that is pretty reasonable - Memberships : Clemson University

Clemson is home to the SC botanical garden so if you are into gardening you could inquire there about garden clubs - I'm sure they are always looking for volunteers! Support the Garden : Public Service : Clemson University : South Carolina

If you like outdoorsy type stuff there is plenty of that in this area - hiking, camping, mountain biking, kayaking (flatwater and whitewater), etc.

I would personally recommend looking in-between Clemson and Anderson in the Pendleton area. That will be convenient to both Clemson and Anderson. That area has some open spaces that would offer the types of homes you are looking for. It would also be convenient to shopping in Anderson and not far from the interstate for the occasional trip into Greenville.

Good luck in your move!

Check out the Keowee area of Seneca. Lake Keowee is beautiful and there are lots of houses that aren't on the lake that would be considered "country" with a couple acres of land. You would only be 10 min from everything in Seneca and your husband would only have a 20 min commute.

Sounds like you need to look somewhere around Pendleton or Sandy Springs. You'll be close to Clemson, able to get to Anderson's outskirts in 10-12 minutes, and to the Anderson YMCA in roughly 20-25 minutes.

I'm beginning to change my mind about being out in the middle of nowhere just to get the 'perfect' house. I want to get involved in clubs and meet people, so I think I'm going to have to look closer to Clemson and Anderson. Thanks so much - this has been really helpful!
