kdkodys, can you post any pictures of your kitchen, would love to see how you updated it!
NJ, I'm still not sure what I'll end up doing. I took a drawer to one of the big box stores and even the kitchen design mgs thought they were well made. Said they were probably birch with a pine box. He sent me over to Sherwin Williams and the mgr showed me how they'd look restained, and for the quickie demo he did, it came out really nice. If I can't restain them to where I like the cabinets, I may try to paint them and do a Hollywood Regency style, similar to the piece below

Not sure if we keep the cabinets if we'll reconfigure, seems it may be hard to do and I'd like to keep the majority of the cabinets as they are. The stovetop, if I can scoot it over a bit, that would be fine, if not, well, it's worked this way for over 45yrs. It's just the two of us, and just one of us cooks, and it's not me
Thanks for the input!!!
If anyone out there in Greenville has similar cabinets and/or doors like this and are getting rid of them, please contact me via PM!!!!
Do you have pictures of your kitchen after the remodel? I'm curious to know what you've done, since we have almost exactly the same kitchen in our new house.

thanks!
I haven't done a single thing to the kitchen, still in limbo, and it unfortunately remains just the same as the day I purchased the home. I have ideas...which for right now is staying in my mind and not getting done. Something will get done one day, but nothing as of yet. Sorry.
Eldemila, you sound just like me! One day...when I feel like it... Then again, we can just say we are going "retro" and loving it! I actually thought about going on Craig's list and getting some retro furniture and calling it a done deed.
I think I might update the hardware, to something a little more modern, (handles) but if you like the cabinets, you could stain them, paint them white, or just get new hardware on the doors(handles).

There's actually a site that has retro kitchens on it. That's how I found what the molding style was called. I wonder if our "one day" will ever come

I sorta like them too. I tried to stain them but it has to be professionally done, which I have seen, but it's quite costly and then, by that time, I might as well replace them. I've thought about painting them. I agree, new hardware would be great. What doesn't work when it comes to cabinets - the dead corner space and the lack of pullouts in the bottom cabinet. And no pantry.
Nice layout you posted. THANKS! The only thing is I'd like to keep the pass through - it's nice to be able to talk to someone sitting on the other side at the table when you're cooking (or in my case, trying to cook).
Maybe sometime this year I'll finally do something about it, but as you can see from the date of my original posting, I don't do much in the way of renovations quickly, so only time will tell.
Eldemila, you could paint them and not necessarily white. A cool green color I've seen done might look nice. We redid our kitchen keeping the cabinets. They are a nice oak with recessed panel doors. We just cleaned, revarnished and fixed some drawers and replaced knobs. We got granite countertops and my husband installed hardwood floors. Total cost was just slightly over $5k with the major cost being floor and countertops. If you do decide to completely gut the kitchen someday I'd remove the cabinets above the passthrough keeping the passthrough removing the built in oven and having a stove/oven either there or elsewhere. If you don't change the cabinets at the very least that area near the refridgerator I'd remove and replace it with a nice piece of furniture or buy an unfinished built in to fit the area. Remove the panel on the side of that wall as well. Cooking up a makeover. Not a very clear picture but the color and texture I'm thinking.
THOSE are my kitchen cabinets in our 1960s house!!! I was just at Lowe's to see if they could order me a cabinet door. Nothing like these anymore. Do you still have them? I could buy a door from you. We don't have $ to redo kitchen just yet. I painted mine and changed out the hardware and it looks good. I just need a door for under the sink. Came off hinges and we've already turned it upside down once and came off hinges. so...
Lots have happened since my original post, but updating anything in this kitchen isn't one of them. I need to but just haven't been able.
I can tell you I most definitely have seen my exact cabinets and/or doors at different Habitat Restores in the past, so check there. Check Craigs List too.
Hope you find them. Would love to see a picture of what your updated cabinets look like even though I will eventually replace my cabinets.
We're looking at a house with old cabinets and are thinking about refinishing them as well.
YouTube has tons of videos about this topic. Thinking about spraying them inside and out
for a new finish. Lowe's has a highly rated airless sprayer for $300 which would speed up
the job. Rustoleum and many other companies have kits which get good ratings. Search
for Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation.
Lastly, to save more money looking at SpreadStone roll on paint. It has stone particles
and gives you a granite like finish. This would help keep the formica in place and replace
when we have the money. YouTube also has a bunch of videos on using these kits.
