I refinished my cabinets with chalk paint. You can even take classes on how to use chalk paint in the Greenville area. It's an extremely easy process and my kitchen looks a million times better. If you need suggestions on a place that offers this class, I highly suggest Terri's Treasures.

I'd love to see pictures. We painted our cabinets a dark brown and they came out nice. I would have rather replaces them but it's very expensive and the cabinets are solid wood in excellent condition.
Just saw this thread. Honestly, those 60s cabinets are gorgeous. It might be a crime to paint them! :-)
On a personal front, the only existing kitchen in our 1938 Colonial Revival was an add-on dating from the late 1940's (with a terrible "update" in the 70s). We did a kitchen build in an adjacent room, and turned this old kitchen into a Prep kitchen/Butler's Pantry (so yeah, we have two kitchens). Repainted the existing cabinets, installed new countertops, removed the fridge and put in refrigerator drawers. I also found an original light fixture from 1938 on Etsy. Built a wall, added a door and installed real stained-glass windows we had brought with us from our old house in Northern Virginia.
We would have replaced the floors, but underneath them lies the dreaded asbestos linoleum. I didn't hate them enough to tackle that! Obviously the sink, faucet cabinet hardware and subway tiles on the wall are new as well.
