My wife and I are starting to plan an exploratory trip to the area around Greenville next month, to see how we'd like living there, after a lifetime up north (it snows up here!). We're interested in some fairly secluded spots with some land (maybe an acre or two) and not that big a house. We are not water people at all. We don't golf either. We're more into hiking, birding, and peace and quiet. If we were about 30 minutes' drive from "reasonable" shopping (whatever "reasonable" turns out to mean), doctors, etc., that'd be ok. We're not going to be able to afford anything with an asking price over $200K.
When we visited there in early 2009, we liked what we saw in brief drives around places such as Easley, Pickens, Liberty, Travelers Rest, etc. We liked those areas a bit more than we did when we struggled with some congestion along route 29 near Greer. We did not get very close to Spartanburg but we have no objection to considering it. We drove through Clemson and Anderson, but probably weren't there long enough to give either of them a fair shake, so we may go back there, too.
So what other areas might we look around in? Since we're not interested in paying anything extra for "water view" etc., we could go inland a ways. But where, in general? Are any particular towns areas we should avoid for any particular reasons, such as crime, absolutely dead, etc?
Anderson is coming into its own with pretty much all the main "mainstream" shopping (Kohl's, Best Buy, etc) and some decent restaurants. Clemson Blvd is the main commercial road there, and can be very congested. Anmed Health in Anderson is one of the area's best hospitals, and Anderson is working hard on their downtown area. There's bound to be non-lake rural property for a decent price around Anderson.
The Clemson-Seneca area is becoming big with retirees, and again has most necessities in a bit more of a small-town setting. The university in Clemson affords some extra cultural opportunities, and both towns are picturesque. I would imagine again, some of the non-lake rural land/housing would be fairly resonalbe. Anderson is a quick drive if you need to go into "town".
Spartanburg is improving as well. I'm somewhat familiar with the city itself, but not so much its outer areas. Spartanburg has almost as much as Greenville as far as shopping, dining and cultural things go, but is a little rougher around the edges.
Thx. It's good to have the opinion on the hospital, since at our age, and my health (diabetic) medical services are a big factor. And we do enjoy cultural opportunities, and knowing that the college area around Clemson might afford us some such is also helpful. And I also appreciate your "take" on the Spartanburg area too.

Glad you found it helpful! BTW - Spartanburg Regional is a premier medical facility, and of course both Greenville Hospital System and St. Francis in Greenville offer comprehensive facilities and multiple campus locations.
Husband and I also are headed down in May, but interested in Greenville area's. Can some one help me with how to use this forum. All I seem to be able to do is post a reply. I just did an MLS search for you looking for a minimum of 1 acre and a 3br/2 bath house. Found 91 under $200,000. Some are nice, some not so nice. They are scattered all over the Upstate.
This is good information for me too. My husband and I have been down the G-Ville area twice and are planning on moving down late summer or early fall (after selling our Massachusetts home first). We're VERY interested in researching areas where the houses have a little land around them and additionally, if possible, no HOA's. We're both very excited about the upcoming move!
