We found this little guy on our porch late last year when we first moved to Greenville. Can anyone identify the type of snake this is? I have higher quality pictures if these are too low res.
Little guy couldn't have been more than three feet long and he was pretty slender. Judging by the Google images, I'd have to agree with you. He was very docile, but that could have been because of the time of year: it was just starting to cool down.
I wanted to be sure he was harmless in case he decides to show up again this year as it gets warmer.
With the exception of the coral snake which is not in the upstate and is very obvious "red and yellow kill a fellow", all of our poisonous snakes are pit vipers ............
Figured i'd just bring this back up.. I think this is just a milk snake, but.. That head..
Hated to kill it, but dog was raising hell last night, went out in the dark with a flashlight, saw this thing coiled up and saw it striking at the dog.. It was gonna die at that point. Tossed it in the back of my truck to dispose of down the road so the dog wouldn't try to eat it and snapped this pic..
That is a full-bed pickup, not one of the short 4ft jobs.. so.. Scale purposes.. I would say he's about 4ft long.
I see several black snakes around the area where I live now. In west Greenville/Easley, where I used to live, I had a copperhead snake near my house. I left it alone for a week but it kept coming around and I finally decided to shoot it.
Sure enough, cut its head off, put it in alcohol and my friend positively identified it as a copperhead. Very poisonous.
I've had several black/king snakes around this summer.. More than normal, but.. Not crazy numbers. This one. Again, i think it's just a harmless milk snake, but.. At night, under the light of a flashlight, with it striking and a dog barking its head off.. Thing looked like it was 10 foot long. I probably heard a rattle and saw 6 inch long fangs, too..
