Hello considering retiring to Greenville/Spartanburg area ? Currently livng in Va outside DC ( Fairfax ) really want to leave this expensive, stressful traffic clogged area. Thoughts on retiring to Greenville vs Spartanburg ? cost of living ? healthcare ? Ease of getting to know people ? Senior services and activities ?

thanks

It would help to know what some of your interests and like/dislikes are. If you like the outdoors, for example, you would probably like the areas west and north of Greenville- Oconee, Pickens, and north Greenville counties. If you prefer the suburbs, Simpsonville would be a better choice. The Greenville Hospital system has hospitals all around the area, as well as some other fine hospitals. Again, it depends upon your specific needs, and how far you are willing to travel. Bear in mind that with convenience to everything comes traffic.

OP, are you looking for a retirement community to live or just a nice quiet neighborhood?

Welcome (I hope)! As far as healthcare goes, both Greenville and Spartanburg are each home to 2 major hospitals/systems - Greenville has Greenville Hospital System and St. Francis, while Spartanburg has Spartanburg Regional and Mary Black Health System. I'm not sure about Spartanburg, but the Greenville area has quite a few large specialty practices as well.

You'll probably find the cost of living very low compared to where you are now in both Greenville and Spartanburg, although Spartanburg might be a tick or two lower. I would imagine (although I don't have any experience with this-someone else can chime in on this one) that Greenville has a wider variety of facilities and programs geared towards seniors. There are more and more people retiring to this whole area all the time, so I would think those sorts of things are on the upswing.

People here are mainly friendly and welcoming. No matter where you live in the area, you'll meet people from all over the country (and some from other countries). You'll probably get lots of helpful information and assistance from locals on this forum, and when you visit or move here. Good luck!
