One of the nicest regional airports I've flown into has been Savannah (International) Airport. Maybe GSP could take a few cues from them.
I assume you're talking about interior decor.... Using Google Maps/Satellite, the entire airport looks about the size of the A Concourse at GSP.
I personally like the look of GSP inside & out.... It's kind of Euro, no-nonsense while providing all the services. Sure details could be massaged a bit, but overall, as long as they can make the chokepoints flow better, I think the additional traffic will be easily handled.
I think the security setup should be changed at GSP, they need to renovate the middle area completely, the narrow hallways leading to security are odd, and then the giant "dining" area that is never really fully used in the middle,+ for many flights you get off the plane, go upstairs and then back downstairs?
When I worked there part time they would take the wheelchair passengers up two elevators to their gate, then back down again to get out onto the runway. Also if you want to meet your party at their concourse you have to stand next to the glass doors, and there is no waiting area to speak of, or chairs of any kind anywhere near there. it just doesn't make any sense to me.
The airport itself is nice IMO, plenty of parking, easy to check in, easy to navigate, I just think a renovation to that security level of the building would be good.

Agreed! Parking and check in are very easy at GSP, but the security set-up is kind of a pain. Plus, the dining area is really dated. Fun fact: The only domestic airport where I've been pulled aside for additional screening is GSP... On three different occasions.
I really enjoyed the front page article in the Greenville News yesterday for two reasons (not direct quotes):
1. Southwest is already seeking out sponsorship opportunities in our area.
2. Delta "welcomes the competition", but seems unphased by how it will impact their business.
Those 2 points also stood out to me as well. Will be GREAT to see SWA sponsoring Fall for Greenville or Artisphere or Freedom Weekend Aloft, etc...
When Airtran went into Charleston, Delta dumped extra capacity on that market, and undercut Airtran's fares to the point where few flyers were using the new, cheaper carrier. I don't believe we'll see the same scenario here (or at least to the same drastic extent).
I have to believe that what happened in Charleston had something to do with the fact that Airtran funneled most of its traffic through ATL, the same as Delta. So I think that there, Delta was more protecting it's sacred ATL fortress hub than just running the new kid out of Charleston "just because". I don't really see DL going that route out of GSP.

I agree. Plus, I think it is important to note that GSP and CHS are two very different airports serving two very different populations. CHS doesn't lose flights to nearby airports like GSP does. Most people flying into our out of the Charleston area use CHS. Maybe a few use MYR or CAE on rare occasion, but I bet that is rare. GSP, on the other hand, has been losing 66% of its potential air traffic to CLT and ATL. Thus, I think we will see a huge increase in air travel at GSP. The region's 1.2 million people will mostly use GSP, and there will also be increased traffic from people in the midlands, western NC, and perhaps some from Charlotte and even Atlanta as well. I think it's safe to say that GSP will be the state's busiest airport again in a few years.
Southwest will certainly help CHS too, because some people will choose to fly and take advantage of cheap fares. But the potential pool of travelers, especially business travelers, is much greater at GSP.

I agree about the increase in air travelers and certainly hope GSP has plans in place for the security screening lines. When Independence was flying here and the airport peaked at 1.8 million a year, the lines for security screening could be painfully long. As a frequent flyer and for selfish reasons, as bad as this sounds, I must admit I have enjoyed the last couple of years of decreased air traffic....so much easier in the airport.
