One of the things I like about living here has been the farmers markets in the area. It seems worthy of a thread, as people may want to research about the subject. Whole Foods (http://wholefoodsmarket.com/storesbeta/greenville/ - broken link)has a little one going on Tuesdays, and of course there's Main St. in Greenville on Saturdays. The State farmer's market is on Rutherford Road and is open all week, although you will find the most vendors there on Saturdays.

Nice article in the paper on the one in Easley, and now Clemson:

EASLEY — On Friday, Clemson will become the latest in a growing list of cities and towns in Pickens County promoting farmers markets, and local vendors couldn't be happier.

For some, the expanded interest in farmers markets is almost a perfect storm, a combination of growing interest in eating healthy foods and the slow economy.

“There are a lot more people who are interested in their food, more interested in where it comes from and how it's grown,” said Daniel Anthony, owner of C&D Farms in Anderson.

Glad to see that! A Farmers Market in Clemson should do very well.

Fountain Inn is supposed to have a new venue built for their Farmers Market - but I haven't been able to check it out yet.

I went to a farmer's market for the first time in my life a couple of weekends ago. It was the one on Rutherford Rd, and it was a great experience. The prices were pretty good, too. I'll definitely be taking advantage of this more often in the future.

I grew up in Alabama, and my mom was pretty "suburban" (Betty Crocker, Delmonte, etc), but a couple times per summer, we'd make the pilgrimage to the farmers' market, and it was so cool! Would be REALLY cool now to try to get something along the lines of a shrunken Pike Place Market in Seattle - a little produce, a little meat, a little seafood, some flowers & artsy-craftsy thingies.... That would be a MAJOR weekend destination!

It really could become a destination in itself!

I thought this may be of interest to some people.

5% of yesterday's profits at Whole Foods went to GOFO - Greenville Organic Foods Organization. They have an excellent page of links (http://www.gofohealthandeducation.org/links.html - broken link) for local entities that are interested in organic and sustainable farming.

And if you want to buy produce directly from local farmers, go here and order online directly from a grower!
