I've been really fortunate to not have many people close to me pass away. Since I've been alive none of my relatives died prematurely, and hopefully it stays that way. My grandmother passed away recently after a long life.
I was most surprised by my barber dying a few years ago. I talked to him on a Monday to make an appointment, he seemed to be in an especially good mood about where his life was going. Then I go to the barber shop on Friday to learn he was in a fatal car crash on Wednesday. And of course he was one of the nicest people you'd ever meet.

My great grandfather died when I was 8 and I remember that clearly.
