I got word at 1:30pm that my twin brother was in another motorcycle accident. We've (the family) always said he had nine lives. I think he may have used them up. He has head trauma and broken bones (not the first time), tho, now he also has a spinal fracture and is on life support. He's been in pretty bad accidents in the past and has always pulled through. How, I have no idea. He also has an osteotomy due to crohn's disease. His body has taken such a beating over the years.

I'm flying out tomorrow. I couldn't get my cr*p together in time for a flight tonight. I've never vomited over stress before. It was pretty weird. I can't move.

Any way, is it possible to be on a ventilator and be conscious? His girl friend is telling me that he tears out of one eye when she speaks to him. My brother has a DNR, but is on life support just the same. What do I do?

I am terribly sorry to hear this. All you can do is what you are planning to do--go there and find out exactly what the situation is.

I have lost a brother. No matter what they do or what happens to them, there is a bond between siblings that is different than that of any other relationship. I hope the situation turns for the better.

Braunwyn,

I am sorry to hear about your brother. Don't try to think about any of the DNR issues right now, just get to your family as soon as you can.

I pray your brother makes a full recovery.

Braun, I have always been told that when a patient is not in a comatose state but is need of a ventilator the docs will heavily sedate them so he may be able to hear his girlfriend and others speak to him....being tubed is terribly uncomfortable...never been on a vent but I was tubed while conscious...very scary feeling...

Oh.
Everything you can do is be strong, pray, pray a lot. Hope.Be there and show him you are there for him.
Life has strange paths and believe that everything is going to be ok.
It will.

I am so terribly sorry to hear, the link is about ventilators.
According to this PDF ventilators can be used at home and attached to wheel chairs, so that would indicate consciousness.

Well I don't want to give you false hopes but I recenly read a story where a guy was in a coma and they though he could not hear etc. But after years he woke up and he said he could hear everything. There are natural motor skills that can happen though as well like tears, clearing of the throat, mouth smacking, facial movement. Just hold on and pray for the best while honoring your brother's wishes and working with the doctors.
