My firm belief is that you need to be supremely confident in the use of your pistol over any other consideration and that means lots and lots of practice, so choose something you can afford to shoot and are comfortable with. 9mm is my choice.
Personally, none of the above. I use 9MM +P+ in an MP5K-PDW machine pistol. 'spray and pray'. 30 rounds in 3 seconds usually does the trick.
For the rifle cartridges, the guns tend to be too unwieldy in a home environment. Short-barreled shotguns though may work well. (I also use a SB pistol-gripped Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge... the SO can handle this fairly well, and they are dirt cheap).
Advocating a "spray and pray" approach for a home defense type of shooting is incredibly dangerous and also violates several major safety rules for handling firearms.
Guns capable of firing rifle cartridges can be quite compact. If you're willing to go through the time and effort you can purchase an SBR (Short Barrel Rifle) and have almost any length you desire. The average wait time for your $200 tax stamp is around 6 months currently.
The 5.56 ballistics are vastly superior to 9mm for stopping humans.

I would be interested in hearing your take on 'violating several major safety rules for handling firearms', given that there is no on else in my house (well except the dog), I am thousands of feet away from any neighbors, it is a 40' hill and over a mile away from anyone opposite the front door....

Tell me about it. I have lots of them.

All depends on how many they get hit with, in one second.
Rules 2, 3 and 4 would seem to apply. Sounds like you live in the boonies versus most people who live quite close to their neighbors and that's the reason I brought it up. If you would've stated I live in the middle of nowhere without neighbors it would've made a difference.
All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

You could just say Jeff Cooper said that! Then you would be good!
