I just don't want to overpay for features I don't need, but I agree, this is a 1 time purchase, so I'd rather buy something a little better. Gunbroker.com seems to have used 870s in the $300s, so I guess used isn't much cheaper on these "Honda Civics".

I'll not get into the brand debate but instead will comment on Gunbroker. If you're looking for cheap, look elsewhere. Just Sayin'.

I had a 870 express. Mine would not camber 3" or 3 1/2" shells. 2 3/4" shells only.

That's not the model, that's the chamber size, Express models come in standard, magnum, and super mag chamberings. You just happened to own the standard 12 ga. chamber.

It's like any other auction, really; you have to be able to pick a deal.

Some good internet sites for firearms that I personally have used are:

Discount Guns for Sale - Buds Gun Shop
Buy Gun Accessories, Hi-Capacity Mags, Scopes, Gun Parts & More at CDNN Sports, Inc.
Impact Guns Home

Unless you want something very specific, I would look at all of these sites before gunbroker. You will find the same items much cheaper brand new than used on gunbroker.

It certainly looks like a 20+ year veteran of coastal waterfowling, but utterly reliable function has never been an issue in spite of some pretty serious abuse and an austere albeit consistent maintenance plan.
My main reason for suggesting the Wingmaster model in the 870s if one can find a used one cheap is the quality of the barrels. The irregular barrels or 2nd's get cut down and used on "tactical" models and short barreled Express model where the highest quality barrels are used on the Wingmaster line, or at least, this used to be the case.

Check you local gunshops that take trade-ins and sell on consignment. Those that take Highway Patrol trade-ins will be selling used ones much cheaper. I've picked a used Wingmaster 870 up for under $200. .They may or may not need a little work; so, buyer beware or have someone who knows their shotties or is an armorer look it over for you.
