Don't assume you can show your gun to someone who's breaking into your home and just stop them. I've had friends who thought as long as they had a gun, the bad guy would be scared off...those are the friends I discourage from buying a gun. If you can't aim at an intruder and fire your weapon, you are a lot safer not having one. Get some pepper spray or a baseball bat (assuming you're big enough and strong enough to keep hold of the bat) if you're scared to fire the gun.

If someone breaks into my house, by the time they see my gun I will have already shot them. I keep it ready to go and it only takes a few seconds to get to it.

I don't care at all about my belongings, they're insured. But if someone breaks in while we're home, then I will have to assume they're intending to harm me or my children.

Brandishing is illegal. But in Texas, I feel perfectly comfortable in the fact that if someone breaks into my house, I will shoot first and ask questions later. That said, there are times when letting someone know you are armed will shoo them away. It's happened to me a couple of times, as my work sometimes takes me into bad parts of town. If you are the wrong color, some times you stand out like a sore thumb. In both instances they approached my car, and I had my 9mm Ruger in my lap. One guy just turned and walked away, the other guy started yelling like "what, you gonna shoot me MF?" But neither gave me any problems.

Most of the time, just SHOWING someone your (ready to shoot) gun suffices to make them stop their attack. If this were not true, lots and lots of people would fail at defending themselves, cause they AINT at all good with the shooting, much less their tactics.
Is this a question, or a policy statement?

Worse, much worse. If they have the draw on you don't even try it unless you're sure they're going to shoot you regardless. You'll almost certainly be hit before you can get off a shot.

Stay alive first, then worry about legalities.

How does making a threat help you stay alive?
