Thanks to everyone for the information. I see a load of the black rifles in many forms when I go to a gun show, so much that it all looks alike after a while. One question, I have noticed that some rifles are chambered exclusively for .223 Remington and others for 5.56 Nato. Are the cartridges that different? I always thought they were the same. I have an M1A and I can use Winchester .308 or 7.62x51 the rifle will shoot either with no issue. I was thinking of the RRA since it said Wylde (sp) as the chamber indicating either cartridge. Thanks Again
I have an A-2 Bushmaster, no problems here. If I remember right rifles stamped 5.56 can shoot either 5.56 or 223. Rifles stamped 223 should only shoot 223. Something to do with higher pressures with the 5.56.
Look at the AR platform as something you can build and improve on. Replace the milspec trigger with something aftermarket. Worth the extra dollars to do it, although lots of folks like to leave it alone, it all depends on how you intend to shoot it.
Get comfy with bunches of rounds sent downrange. Then find a quality barrel or even full upper that will allow you to shoot how you want. I purchased a Bushmaster Varminter upper years ago that I like, and then bought a Vmatch upper later on. Personally I like those, but there are no doubt plenty of others that are fine as well.
You don't need to spend a fortune on a cadillac, unless you want to of course. Just be comfy enough in the knowledge that if you don't like a feature on the one you have, you likely can change it fairly easily.

There is your answer OP! If it is marked anything other than 5.56 NATO it is NOT a Mil-Spec AR. I wouldn't buy anything other than a Mil-Spec. Bushmaster, Colt, S&W, Rock River, FN, Stag Arms, Bravo Company, LaRue Tactical and many more ARE! Don't monkey with the impostors. Look for that 5.56 NATO headstamp on the barrel and remember what I said about the aircraft grade forged receivers and hard coat anodizing.
He didnt say it was a bad gun, but what he was saying if you are going to get AR he recommended going top of the line since it is not a cheap gun platform.

That means stay away from Hesse Arms and a few others!
Century Arms too with their ground off (till the parts turn blue and remove the temper) M-16 parts to make them civilian legal! Also parts dropped from a chopper and banged up rejects refinished with flat black paint!
I probably knew better than to reply to a black rifle question. I quit.
Nah, your info was accurate enough. "Colt is better than S&W"...."RRA and Bushmaster stink"...blah-blah-blah isn't though!
