Of course, this wasn't exactly the way the city of Chicago had planned the outcome.

Pro-gun group uses Chicago firearms buyback program to fund shooting camp for kids | Fox News

Quote:
A pro-gun group claims it flipped the script on Chicago's firearms buyback program by selling old, broken rifles to the city and then using the money to buy guns and ammo for an NRA-sponsored shooting camp for kids.

"Guns Save Life," based in Champaign, Ill., recently sold 60 firearms to the Chicago Police Department -- 10 of which were manufactured before 1898 -- in exchange for $6,240 in gift cards, according to group president John Boch. The sale also included five BB guns and a rickety pump-action shotgun that was held together by duct tape and zip ties, he said.
So...........when is NYC Mayor Bloomberg going to host one of these?

When great planning meets the law of unintended consequences sometime you get to smile.

"The real delicious irony here is that the city of Chicago is paying for rifles that we're giving away to young people as part of this camp," Boch told FoxNews.com. "The program was intended to get unwanted and unused guns off the street to make the community safer. We provided them unused and unwanted guns."

Unwanted, because "they just didn't work."

Personally I think they are great if you have a broken or cheap gun. You can use the money to buy a better firearm. Im all for these programs and hope they raise the amount they pay.

That's typically all they get in these buy back programs - broken guns. Useless scrap metal. I mean think about it - A gun is the only product, besides drugs, that one can sell for more value used and/or stolen then they can new. Homeboy ain't turning in a workable gun. Useless "feel good about ourselves" waste-of-taxpayer-money legislation at it's best.

The fact that private citizens and groups are using the funds to learn responsible gun ownership (and, hey, all without governmen telling them what to do) is excellent. In that case, it's not such a waste.

It is a huge waste of money but one that can benefit gun owners.

Isn't it ironic? Gun dealers are one of the primary beneficiaries of buy back programs. It's a big profit market for them. They collect the junk they buy for pennies on the dollar througout the year from people and sell them for a good profit when one of these buy back programs start back up. I would go so far as to suggest that gun dealers are in cahoots with these municipalities that use tax money to fund these buy back programs. Taxpayers are non the wiser, but they 'feel better".

The Lee P. Brown mayoral administration in Houston organized a gun buyback in 2000. The Chronicle reported it as a big success, but it was a joke. Collectors Firearms and a number of other gun retailers advertised "$100 CASH for your guns" on the same day as opposed to the Gallery Furniture gift certificates the city was giving out.
