not really a thought or implication, but I heard a news report from NBC radio news today (early mon morning) that said the shooter had a "100 round ammunition barrel." Whoa! The reporter was someone named Constantini, and it was top of the hour news on a show called 'First Light with Dirk Van.' I tried to track down the audio on the NBC radio website, and on the Dirk Van Website, but no luck.
No big surprise, the media in general is known for not fact checking or doing simple research so they at least sound somewhat intelligent. On Saturday morning I was flipping through the news channels wanting to get more info on the incident and I didn't find a single one (even my local news) that I could watch for more than 15 seconds without being disgusted by the flashy catch lines and sensationalism, not to mention the utter cluelessness.
I own three ARs and love to shoot. I also understand how people can want them taken off the market after such a tragedy. I also think its a small mind trying to comfort itself that this person is some demonic or evil person. Yes he is insane as Manson was and is insane. Simplification of a person as evil is a small mind trying to make sense of something that can not be made sense of.
The shooter is not some anomaly that is very rare but any of us if pushed to some extent can break and become this person. He may very well have not been pushed but his mind was damaged to the point that it either took very little to make him snap or he went over the edge because of some mental defect. If we had mandatory mental and physical health in a universal health care system it may have stopped a couple of these. Not all thats for sure but some of these people would be stopped before they happened.
The first time I can think of this happened was the Austin tower shooter where an ex marine barricaded himself on top of the Austin tower and shot many people. He asked in a note to have an autopsy done and it showed he had a tumor in the brain. Its not known for sure if this did something to cause him to act this way but it seems a bit odd that he knew something was wrong and it turned out he was ill in the brain. What if that could have been caught before he locked himself in the tower? All these hillbilly's who want to have not health care because the Government is evil help to make things like this more likely to happen. They don't want health care, gun control and most of them don't want dental work done from what I have seen of many tea baggers.

But why bring it up here? Their are other forums for that.

Wha....? You are really stretching it. Your post can't be more out of left field. I mean - how in the world is this even remotly related to the topic of universal health care? The guys wasn't poor, their is no evidence he lacked of health care. There is no evidence he had a medical condition that would be treatable by health care. There is no evidence ANY shooting is attributable to lack of health care coverage. It's just not a relevant topic. Lets start a topic on dental work, I mean it's about as relevant.
This guy was clearly not right in the head, but that's a different topic direction from what you are considering. For any health care coverage, particularly mental health - is for the most part voluntary. Meaning you have to be responsible for at least visiting a doctor or mental health specialist. Now, under certain extenuating circumstances, if someone can be proved to be a danger to himself or others, authorities can impel them to seek treatement - but that is a fine line of individual vs. society rights. Do you want the government in the job of identifying those that are mentally ill, determining who is mentally ill, and forcing them into institutions and treatments? That harkens back to the last century when the mentally disturbed were forced into electro-shock treatments and lobotomies. Not even the most pro-health care coverage person wants that. Actually, such groups as the ACLU (not exactly a "tea bagger" type organization) is on the forefront of preventing such occurances. Look at what you are saying MANDATORY MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING...mandatory, really? It's not one party alone that will be complaining.
Now clearly, society has to improve it's ability to identify and treat those that are mentally ill, but that must be balanced with individual rights.

Lets keep politics out of this discussion, or at least politics that have zero to do with the topic of this thread, much of your post isn't even remotely related. Health care, really?

I agree. You know I believe in self-moderation by the users and hesitate to report an off-topic post to the mods. But that one is borderline silly.
Assualt rifles, that is, using a strict definition, an automatic fire weapon, are already heavily regulated. Have been since the time of Bonnie and Clyde. The bad guy did not use an automatic assualt rifle.
I think you are talking about what is labeled in the media as an assault weapon. What is an assault weapon? There is no consistent definition....plus, his long gun apparantly jammed at some point and he used his hand gun. Made no difference - same semi-automatic action.
No one can agree what an assualt weapon is, i've read what Massachusett's defines as an assault weapon and it's almost a "if it was made on tuesday, it must be an assualt rifle" type of surreal and confusing definition.
Kind of a pointless statement if you aren't going to back it up with any reasoning
Because there is no real need for them in my opinion. If you want your hunting rifle or pistol, so be it, I don't care... however I have never heard one good reason that a person needs an assault rifle.
1. Protection? Why can't you protect your home with a pistol or shotgun?
2. Hunting? Anyone that hunts with an assault rifle is missing the point of hunting.
3. ???
The only thing pointless is the actual owning of an assault rifle.
My hunch is people that own assault rifles own them because they like to brag that they own them. To me that is not reason enough to keep them legal.

Or maybe they enjoy taking them out to the range and doing some target shooting with them?
People like you still don't get it, making this or that gun illegal only keeps it out of the hands of law abiding citizens, anyone who wants one will still be able to get one with little to no trouble. So explain to me why it's so important to keep the so called assault rifle out of the hands of those that enjoy the sport of shooting.
