Draw the line as too big or too small for personal defense?

Whatever you can carry comfortably and shoot accurately. It's a cliche, but the .25ACP in your pocket is infinitely more effective than the .45ACP you left at home or in your vehicle.

My mom carries a lightweight Ruger LCR in .22 Mag, and it's adequate for her. Personally, I carry a 9mm Luger or .38 Special.

Based on your list, I would draw the line below .32 ACP for an ultra-deep concealed carry. The .25ACP in "Saturday Night Special" form has killed many people, but for me it's just too weak. A good .22Mag hollow point would be better.

If I'm not worried about ultra-concealment I'd go with a .380ACP as the minimum, but I'd prefer a 9mm Luger.

some pocket 9mm's can be had for the price of some smaller calibers.

M&P shield for under $350 (online). a box of defense 9mm ammo.
whats not to like?

I carry a Kahr CT380 7+1 loaded with Hornady CD ammo. It's a very thin & compact pistol that fits my hand nicely.

If I'm wearing a jacket, then it's a Kahr CW45.

With the new ammo being made the 380 is a usable minimum. The 9mm is better. the 40 or 45 is best for real one shot stopping power. Stopping meaning kill the sob, now.

it just depends on what you are comfortable carrying. I am comfortable carrying 2 Glock 17's in 9mm and a Charter Arms bulldog in 44 special.

All at once?

The only caliber worth carrying is a .44 magnum. Everyone knows that. Why you don't even need to hit 'em, the concusion alone will make the bad guys eyes bleed.

I saw a guy shot in the forehead at close range with a .25. It bounced off! Literally. Hit the heavy bones and richoceted off. Didn't even give him a headache.

Well not everyone can CC a 44 mag. Averaging 3 pounds, even a snub nosed S&W will only fit under Andre the Giant's coat comfortably. And that concussion goes two ways. After squeezing off a couple rounds, no one in an enclosed space will hear anything for a while. Like "police, hands up."

And, if one is going to essentially open carry, a pistol grip semi automatic rifle or a shotgun is far more effective.

I carry a Ruger LCR in 38 Spec+P and, at 13 oz. I think it is a good choice for a guy with a suit and tie.

This is an age old question and of course carry the largest caliber firearm that you will actually carry, any firearm is better than no firearm but for me a 9mm is the smallest that I feel a person should carry and with tiny 9mm firearms around on the market, such as the Ruger LC9, there is no longer a reason to carry a 380 or smaller.

For times when it is impossible to carry my Glock 27 .40, or my Kahr E9 9mm, then begrudgingly I go to my secondary which is a North American mini 22 magnum but those times are very rare.
