Archery season just opened in Montana, and upland birds EXCEPT pheasant are open.. Went out today with a friend and beat some aspen creek bottoms to death with my dog and only managed to find one ruffed grouse (which my friend took on the wing). Only covered 2 miles on foot but was in some pretty thick tangle.

Saw another grouse hunter driving out from a higher elevation and he only bagged one dusky grouse. My friend in Billings got one Hungarian partridge..

Seemed like today was a day of singles..

Bow opener was a cluster. I had to boot some clown out of my tandem. The next day three doogans came in loud after light and pretty much scared away everything for 1/4 mile. 2 of the guys had shots but didn't connect. Probably try again this weekend.

A buddy heard something below him at light so he took a pic of it with his cell phone. It was a Mt Lion and it dropped the deer it was carrying. Crazy stuff.

Went out for grouse this morning. It was 45deg when I hit the mountain I was hunting, 80 degrees when I said "Okay- this is too hot". I flushed 2 grouse- no shots in thick cover.

As I drove down the mountain a rancher was gathering cattle along the road. We stopped to chat, he told me where he's seen the most birds (which was close by), and as we chatted 4 grouse walked across the gravel road about 20 yards in front of us. Right into an open field. We just laughed and watched my dog go catatonic in the Jeep, lol.

Ah.. hunting.

Another great day. My female GSP 'Dutch', my big boy GSP 'Schnitzel' and my buddy's GSP 'Dexter' (who is the son of my two). Dogs are doing a great job finding, pointing and holding birds, and my new Browning Silver kicks a*s! Great pointing gun, fits me like a t. Pulled at least 3 40 yard shots no problemo.

Here's some of the country we hunt. My friend With his GSP Dexter

We hunt sections- 1 sq mile plots. We zig-zag so we actually walk 5 miles in a section. Of course the dogs do a lot more.

Lots of birds.

Dogs tracked and pointed up lots of birds. We harvested 5 roosters between 2 hunters and 3 dogs.

2 of the roosters were big and old. Right barrel shows them. Very nice birds.

Hunting until Sunday morning then back to work. Going out again in 2 weeks.

AHA! Plentywood!
I, of course, am in 3 county.
Nice birds.
I don't hunt anymore. Can't walk that far without running out of air, and "they" won't allow me to ride the ATV across country.
