The item was found a few feet under the ground by a metal detector on a property near Frostburg, MD. It was in an old trash pit with old bottles and assorted other trash from the early-mid 20th century. Any clue what type of gun this was? Thanks in advance!
Sorry about the lack of scale, relative took the photo along with many others of stuff he found. I am taking a bit of interest in trying to track down the gun. One person said it was a toy gun, it looks like a lot of metal for a toy, but WDIK?
WOW - can you wash some of the crud off? That's just caked on mud right?
This looks like a modern polymer pistol, looks like all of the plastic including the trigger guard and grip have...melted? disintegrated? (what was once the grip appears to only be the magazine, small caliber looks like). Strange as I would think that would be what would remain after everything else rusts away. Maybe someone tried to burn it.

It was found in a midden with old bottles and plenty of ashes. Whether those ashes were dumped from a fireplace, or represent an old burn pile for trash, I do not know. The gun could very well have been burned.
The property where the firearm was found was full of junk, 130 years of habitation on the site before modern trash collection took place. This particular trash pit seems to have glass bottles and ceramic lids from the early-mid 20th century. I am not sure if anything could have ended up in there more modern than the 1950s or maybe 1960s.
I have not physically seen the item, but my understanding is that it is falling apart, like when you try to scrub off the mud, the rusted metal is coming off too.
I'm stumped, early 20th century not many semi-automatic models with that shape unless the muzzle is completely rusted out. Some early model Walther I would guess - could be a PPK, PP, Model 8 or 9...maybe a "Baby Browning".
The only thing I can think it might look like is a rotted away old flare pistol nazi guns - Google Search
Hmmm....interesting. The former property owner had some Nazi army stuff though a relative who served under Gen. Patton. That would explain how a firearm could have been so casually discarded as well, it was only a flare gun.
I will research the other suggestions and pass them along too. Thank you everyone for your suggestions so far.
