Hi all.
I want to hunt elk with a muzzle loader.

I own several muzzle loaders but they are revolvers.

I have been invited to go to muzzy season with some people I know so I need a new or used rifle.

I am good with iron sights so I’m good with that.

I don’t really want to spent too much.
In my perfect world 5-6 hundred dollars would be great.

What would you recommend?

Thanks.
Andy.

The Thompson-Center muzzleloaders are good, you probably want a .54 or bigger caliber. That is, if you want a more or less traditional muzzleloader. The "inline" guns are good, but to me they don't look right.

I got out of muzzleloading years ago, so my comments may be out of date.

Look around locally and online, it seems that most guns and ammo are in short supply so you are best to take what you can get, if you are serious about hunting this fall.

I'm assuming you want a caplock, if you went with flintlock, at least you would not be hunting around and paying scalper's prices for caps.

As I am sure you know, the inlines use a shotgun #209 primer, these are in short supply as well.

Traditional or modern? With the answer to that question, proper recommendations can be made.

TC no longer sells traditional muzzleloaders, just the inline stuff.

Personally, I have a Lyman Great Plains rifle that I built from a kit in .54 caliber. It's a tack driver. I think the completed rifles are around 650, kits are cheaper.

Check with Track of the Wolf for pricing and availablitiy.

Traditions sidelocks are a good bargain. You can also buy do it yourself kits. I suggest .50 caliber.

If I were you I'd look into Thompson center I have one that's more traditional one but you can get sportier versions with even breach primer is that your thing. I got mine for $110. It's a 50 cal so it's plenty to take down an elk.

Check this one out.
