.22 is totally sufficient. A lot of guys up here take coyotes with a .22-250 with solid bullets to preserve pelts. A buddy of mine has a .22-250 loaded in the truck for shooting all vermin up in NE Montana- Coons, skunks, prairie dogs, porcupines, coyotes- you name it. Shoots hundreds a year.
I was asking that because I have a .243 which is the only center-fire rifle I own and I dont have any other money for any other guns right now.I was asking about the .243 because a poster was reccommending centerfire for over 100 yards.

Well a .243 will certainly do in a coon. You would want the 80 something grain hollow point bullet if you can find that, not the 100 grain soft point which is intended for deer.

The .243 would be a lot more expensive for ammo, way louder, you would have possibly more issues with not having a good enough backstop to take a shot. Typically around here hunting ammo (as opposed to FMJ in rounds like the 223 and 308) is pushing a buck a shot. I can generally buy .22 lr for 7.5 cents per round or so.

By all means give that old Marlin a try. It should work fine.

I'm not at all sure why you would be shooting at these coons at over 100 yards.

Okay I will shoot the .22 LR or .22 Magnum most likely.I was just mentioning the 100 yards because someone said I would need a centerfire rifle for over 100 yards.I dont know how far the shots would be.Thanks.

Raccoons are not particularly fearful of humans, so you should be able to get pretty close, even if using an ATV or 4 wheeler.

Shot placement would be a bigger factor. Seek some range time, and it'll reward you out in the field.

Getting a 17 HMR is not a option right now.

Oh if that's what you got- 'choot 'em!

But seriously a .22 or .22mag is fine. I've shot piles of varmints with mine.
