I shoot IDPA once a month. I usually use my HK USP Compact 9mm with 15 round magazines, although I've used a .357 revolver to mix things up. I used to be a dedicated 1911 shooter and I was about as good as I'm going to get with a .45acp Springfield Loaded model.
My wife has a Marlin lever action .38/.357 Cowboy Action model. She loves shooting .38 through it. Virtually no recoil and with the barrel length- you get a little more velocity out of the round. The right bullet wouldn't over penetrate any more than a 9mm would.
Personally I wouldn't screw with her with it. Pie plates at 50 yds are toast with her shooting, lol. Plus- they are just plain fun to shoot and a breeze to clean.
For $700, you can get a Ruger PC 9mm pistol caliber carbine, but you can't use the standard 17-round mags. You would have to buy the California compliant 10-round mags.
Another choice is the Beretta CX4 storm pistol caliber carbine in 9mm. Choice of 10 or 15 round mags.
Rifle calibers pentrate walls, so be careful in that regard.
Maybe someone here knows whether or not AR15 round tumble after hitting sheetrock, reducing penetration. I don't know.
If you live in the rural area outside Monument CO with no neighbors and overpenetration is not an issue, then you can buy any AR15 or AK 47 and use 10 round mags. Those are not available for $1000 unless you can find someone dumping an old thumb hole stocked "assault weapon ban" version. They are very unpopular and sell for cheap.
I get what you're saying but I would still run an AR-15 for home defense over pretty much every option.
I've seen a lot of ballistic testing videos where 5.56 rounds have less tendency to penetrate walls than 9mm.
5.56 are so light and fast they begin to tumble and break up after a few sections of drywall. 9mm seem to actually over penetrate more. Especially if we are comparing fmj to fmj.
Do not however use anything bigger than 5.56. Something like 7.62x39 shreds. It will absolutely over penetrate a lot. It's a significant difference.

Any of those will be perfectly suitable. As an active action pistol competitor, your skills are most assuredly sufficient that any of those weapons will be perfectly satisfactory.
I’ve shot USPSA, IDPA, and SASS for years. Anything from a 1911 or a Glock to a ‘73 Win or an AR will do just fine. Or an SAA or double gun. It’s all good.
If you are interested in a long gun, get a PCC AR and start shooting USPSA. It’s a hoot, and you’ll certainly learn to run the gun in no time at all.

Third vote for a gun safe. Other valuables can go in the safe as well. Think about where in your house you can put the safe, if you get a good heavy one.
Automatically? How is that even possible with any legal gun?
Do you mean you fire the entire set quickly? What if another intruder is lurking, or maybe two more?
Seems foolish to keep nothing in reserve. Or do you come out like Yosemite Sam, with TWO guns, one in each hand?
