I second the olive oil. I too have seborrhic derm and this has helped greatly. I apply extra virgin olive oil to my scalp prior to shampooing (u don't need to leave it on for long). I also shampoo with a combo of sulfate free shamoo and regular shampoo (to remove the bulk of the olive oil). I do this once a week and it has reallyhelped. Biotin supplments also help but you have to adhere to taking it daily for a least a month for it to work.
My scalp is really dry and itches constantly. I'VE TRIED JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING.....at Sally's and Walmart that I can find. I've gone to the Dr and he prescribed Nizoral. I've used it but it doesn't work. It dries out my hair and scalp.
My problem is I need moisture on and in my scalp. I've used tea tree oil which is way too greasy. Light hair moisturizing lotion which is still greasy and hot oil treatments that seem to work temporarily for about two days or so. I'm beyond Head and Shoulders which is for dandruff and isn't my problem. Tea tree shampoo doesn't help it just feels good.
Anyone have any home remedies or know of any vitamin supplements I can take to help.
I should add I have purchased some products from salons but I can't remember the names of them.....[/quote]
Try using baby shampoo. It will strip less oil. Or, try not using shampoo at all for a few days.
I really like the Tresseme (sp?) moisture shampoo and conditioner. I let the conditioner sit on my scalp for about 5 minutes in the shower. You could also turn down the temperature of your water. Also, take a fish oil supplement twice a day.
You might also need a dandruff shampoo and not realize it. Your itchy scalp may be caused by a fungus. You don't necessarily have to have "flakes".
I've also heard of massaging castor oil into your scalp before bed and sleeping with a processing cap to avoid getting it all over your bedding. Just shampoo it out in the morning. My husband has "welder's cap" and the castor oil has been working beautifully for him.
Good luck!

Reason: picked up someone else's quote by mistake.
BeHappy2, I really think you might be going about this the wrong way. Once or twice a week is not frequent enough if you have something going on with your scalp. If I were you, I would use a medicated shampoo every day for a week or two to see if this helps. Selsun Blue, maybe.
I believe your scalp needs a good hard scrubbing every day to promote circulation and to get on top of the dermatitis you describe.
You will not reach this problem from the outside. Diet is the answer. My son has the same issue. It would be difficult to know what your triggers are. I would decrease or end consumption of wheat and dairy products. We avoid doctors and over a 20 year span, they never offered anything to help our son except prescriptions that either made it worse or did nothing at all. My most favorite reference is "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Phyllis A. Balch and you should be able to get a copy at most libraries or through inter-library loan. It will have suggestions under dermatitis and is an excellent reference for all medical concerns. My son's triggers appear to be dairy and wheat (like many people) and since cutting those, it has made the whole family feel better. For years, I had to cut my son's hair extremely short and now he can have hair and a healthy scalp.
