Had my hair highlighted last summer and can't afford to get the grow out touched up professionally. What do I dare do at home? Hair is shoulder length, tinted dark blond; roots are light brown with 20% grey. Yup, I have hats to wear ...
I have preserved highlights, yes the salon ones are superior to what one can do at home , by very carefully touching up roots with a small firm brush. Try Perfect 10 its very thick and fast acting, in a tone thats a little lighter than your base color. Carefully brush it on the roots w/ short strokes, and VERY lightly, just barely, blend it in with a wide tooth comb.
Then wash out with full force shower as fast as you can. Even if you are not happy with the result you can go back over a few days later and lightly brush more dye through all of it . The nice thing is that highlights will eventually pop back out again so its still more dimensional than flat color, just do it lightly. Did you know that you can also apply color to damp hair and it will "glaze" your hair and be more transparent than color applied to dry hair? It will not cover roots very well, however.
I've been using Surya Henna cream (I have to buy it online) to keep my roots blended into the rest of my hair. I'm about 90% grey and have an have an all-over color with highlights but I'm very sensitive to hair dyes. I'm trying to use permanent color only a couple of times a year and filling in with a temporary, and non-irritating, color. It's super easy to use and comes in different colors.
Try a demi-permanent color...Natural Instincts is really good. Go about 1 shade lighter than your natural color, so it will wash out in about 2 months, if you don't like the results.....It's very unnoticable, but will give you shine and body! I love it! Just apply to the roots...not all over your hair, until the last 10 mins....leave it on the roots for about 20 mins.....
If you don't like it...it's gone in about 20 washes or so!
I'm not a fan of any home highlighting kit, myself...were it me, I'd just do an all-over color.
