I would get a full foil bleach highlight and then put a 'cinnamon' semi perm color over that...so your 'highlights' would be a cinnamon color... it would fade but you can always put a semi perm color on those highlights...and it will not damage your hair.
In regards to only bleaching to lighten your hair...it depends on a few things...having color on the hair already...how dark your natural color is and how many levels you want to lighten...etc etc. Color can not lift color...so if you have hair color on your hair already...putting another on top of it would not give you they desired color.
Danielle's idea is very good, I have colored my own hair for years (from caucasian dark brown) and professional highlights are a reasonable way to add dimension to your hair that lasts and lasts between single color applications.
Somewhere on this forum(??) I described how I went from very dark brown dye to lighter medium ginger brown all by myself with ordinary drugstore products, and it was a success but it took multiple stages with breaks and deep conditioning in between. If I want a really light brown color, I have to go to a professional or it will be brassy and unattractive.
My current stylist charged me $70.00 for a cut and all over highlights, a fantastic deal. The most I have paid for allover foil highlights and cut is $140 from a master boutique stylist. $400 is absolutely ridiculous, find a new place.
