When I put my hair up in a bun or into a ponytail, the broken off pieces and baby hairs on the sides of my head stick out and look messy. I have tried every product under the sun and nothing keeps the hair down and smooth. I would really like it to look nice and neat. Anyone have suggetions on a product that will actually work? Thanks!

Loosen the ponytail and make tendrils.

OR

Spray the sides while down with a hairspray, let dry and brush through
Pony tail it
Wet comb the sides a bit and respray
smooth with hands

If its really bossy you may want gel or pomade as your first step.

I find if you put your hair up while its a little damp it does help control it.
Do some deep conditioning too so the side hairs stop breaking, and are softer making them easier to control.

Thanks, Opsimathia! Great suggestions. I will definitely try these.
