First part: There is NO WAY to "color" your hair to make it lighter. Color DOES NOT remove color.
You will need to either use lightener to get the shade/tone you want, or use a product like Backtraxx by Paul Mitchell to remove hair color.
Secondly, if you are going to use clip in extensions, buy at LEAST a blended human hair and kankalon mix, if not 100% human hair. With the mix, you can use LOW heat and curl, dry, and flat iron the extensions.
With human hair, you can color, perm, iron, curl, etc... just like attached hair.
I know Sally Beauty Supply currently has wefts of blended hair for $20-25 a weft, and that will make quite a few clip in's. It's cheaper to buy the wefts and sew your own clips into them, as opposed to buying them pre-made.
Personally, I prefer linked in I-tip extensions, for almost anyone; but that's just me.
