When I was growing up, I had long hair & it was always well brushed. However, these days I see so many people, with quite long hair, that obviously has not been brushed, the ends look all raggy or ratty. Is this the new fashion?

Can you show a picture of what you're talking about? I'm not sure I've seen it.

For a few years, there has been a trend in the summer of so-called "beachy waves," where the idea is to put a texturizing product in that makes your hair clump like it's been windblown and exposed to saltwater all day, but I don't know if that's so much a thing anymore. I don't personally like it, and prefer smooth hair to "textured," because to me it always looks itchy and dirty with a bunch of product in it.

I don't have any photos & I am not going to the mall to snap some photos of it lol It is long hair down the back, that instead of all being even & nice it forms into little clumped strands, hence the name, rat tails. I know how it looks, as that is how mine would have looked, if I did a wash on it, but did not brush it.

Of course any kind of grooming or hygiene is optional, maybe I should have thought of a better way to ask the question. I don't like the way it looks, & I am really wondering if it is a new fashion trend.

1. Could be a trend. I don't know.
2. You don't have to like it. Other people choose how to wear their hair.

I'm not sure what you mean by "optional." Isn't everything? I suppose that brushing your teeth is optional, too.

But it's true that everything seems progressively more casual, less groomed, less put together, less kept.

Ends all ratty and raggy? What does that have to do with brushing? It means they don't get their hair trimmed regularly. And brushing can contribute to breakage, or thinning, depending on a person's situation. Combing is better for some people, as combs don't raise the cuticle on the hair, and it's easier to control the pulling. Using a comb instead of a brush doesn't mean one isn't well-groomed. This is an odd topic.

Unbrushed hair does tend to go ratty at the ends. I think it is wash & wear, no brushing. I think it looks very untidy & ungroomed. But of course people have the right to look however they want. And they might even like the way it looks.

I think it is a trend. OP is thinking of blunt cut ends, something that appears straight and neat. Now they have different techniques of cutting to give the "bed-head" or "beachy" looks, you know beachy like after swimming, I guess.

Also, many use a lot of styling products that end up making the hair mat, and if they don't "clarify" it, I used vinegar or a cup of black coffee as a rinse, it starts to look very unkept.

It is there choice, "optional", OP was simply wondering about the "look".

I doubt after use of many of the styling products that a brush could get through it, not even a wire brush used to remove peeling paint.

I don't care what they look like as long as their smell isn't invading my space.
