Definitely the 50's with the 60's a close second. The early 1900's were pretty awful also (I'm thinking the hairstyles worn on Downton Abbey). By the 70's most of us teenagers & young women wore their hair long and parted in the middle. I looked at my 1972 yearbook recently and all the girls had the same boring hairstyle, if you could even call it a hairstyle.

Thankfully my hair is too thick and too wavy to have ever been able to pull off that flat, straight hair with the part down the middle look. And I never missed it either, even though it was THE LOOK when I was in jr high and high school (yes, dating myself here). I remember looking at girls with that plain jane look and thinking, "I may not be cool but I'm also not boring."
I don't like the completely flat, straight look on many people, though it can be striking on the right person. PUT DOWN THE FLAT IRON AND BACK AWAY SLOWLY!
I'll tell you a fairly current look that I absolutely detest - the unparted look. That look where the hair just has a jaggedy non part - I swear, it looks like a person just got up out of bed in the morning, dragged their fingers through their hair, and wandered aimlessly out the door. Though I admit - it blends well with the Pjs and slippers WalMart look nicely enough.
This current decade. From shaved heads to colored peacock hair. Circus clown colors to spiked and scattered dreads.
I'm all about creativity...It's usually not at the expense of damaging the hair follicles.
My nephew did the whole goth theme. He cringes when he sees the pictures. He said his kids think he was trick or treating too long.
The smell of Aquanet was thick in the girls locker room after PE in 1989-91. Bangs had to be teased and sprayed so they stuck up in an enormous wall. I never did this, but I did try some lesser version to fit in.
I think our junior high school was responsible for a few ozone holes.
When I look at photos of myself from the 80s I just cringe. I had the biggest hair and it looked so ridiculous. I eclipsed everyone in the photo with me... except for the friends who also had humongous hair like I did. I used to use those industrial hand driers to blow my hair out and then spray it with half a can of extra hold Aquanet.
I also used to put about 100 little braids in my hair at night so it would be "kinky." Talk about a poor choice. It took forever to do and to take the braids out. I looked insane. I remember the first time I met one of my roommates. She walked in, saw me with a head full of braids sticking out all over and said, "Oh my God. I mean, hi. Nice to meet you." (She turned out to be much crazier than I was, however, even though her hair was pretty normal.)
