I had to admit in my sixties that my day of wearing long hair had passed. It just looked awful long.
I envy older women with beautiful gray or grayng long hair. Every so often I see someone wuth beautiful hair, simply arranged and well groomed and feel pangs.
But at least I have hair!
Maybe I have to come to that realization, too. My hair is just not going to grow out gracefully. I think I take after my dad, who had lots of hair until the day he died at 94, and not like my mom, whose hair thinned and thinned until she wore a "topper" for the last 10 or so years of her life.
I would love to have long hair but maybe it's just not to be. OP, your hair looks lovely. Keep at it!
I would LOVE to grow mine out...I’m not sure what is under there anymore, but based on my sister & mother, both now deceased, it will be a mix of white, gray & light brown.
I have colored my hair darkest brown for years. It’s parted in the middle, and every time I stop coloring it, I have a white stripe down the part, reminiscent of a skunk.
My hair is long...down to my backside. Hairdressers tell me that the only way to grow it out is to “chop it off”...hell, no! And that’s another thing...why do hairdressers always want to give older women short, helmet-head hairstyles?
There is a method for removing color from hair, then dyeing it white...I’ve seen it on young women, who then sometimes add colors like pink or lavender (I don’t want the colors). Does anyone know about that?
gypsychic, your hair looks great!

DON'T DO IT!!!! I tried to get "streaks" when I first started growing out, and everywhere she put bleach my hair literally MELTED OFF!!!! And she was a veteran colorist (decades experience!) Do not do any bleaching. You will just have to bite the bullet and deal with the stripe and start trimming your hair little by little. For awhile you can cover up with headbands, scarves, etc, but sooner or later you just start rocking it. As it grows out it starts to look better, especially if your hair, as you say, is like mine where there is a mix of colors. I still have dark dye on the ends but it actually kind of blends in with the rest of my hair now.
Give it a try! Sooner or later you will probably be forced to stop anyway like I was - I had a cyst on my scalp from decades of that dark dye, plus it was looking and feeling weird. All those chemicals are very toxic and absorbed by your body. And, as we age, the dye just doesn't look right anymore - I see it all the time on other women. I just will never go back.
gypsychic you know I agree with you totally - dyed hair LOOKS and feels dyed. It just does.
Like you, I went natural last year and I feel great and LOVE the natural shine! It's super healthy. And while my hair is short, it's not helmet hair (it's been spiky and short for decades now). One thing for sure - growing out short hair is easier than growing out long hair, so I commend you on your discipline, Your hair looks great.
Like you, I had no idea what color my hair naturally was and I was surprised at how much dark was on the "underside." But I love it and will never, ever go back to dying it dark brown or auburn. No way.
Thank you for posting. It looks good on you. When I finally do grow my gray out I want to keep it longish as I have always had long hair.
