CHICAGO (AP) -- Oumou Wague has been braiding hair in her Chicago shop for more than a decade, carrying on a tradition passed down for generations in her native Senegal. To braiders, her talent for weaving women's hair into elaborate styles isn't just a livelihood, it's an art form.

A cosmetology license for braiding?! How ignorant, IMO.
It's not like you are getting a cut, color, or wash. It's braiding, something quite a few of us have done for YEARS, and continue to do for our friends, family, self, children, and children's friends.
I play with hair all the time with the kiddo's friends, and their Mom's ask me why don't I go to "beauty school" and get paid for it. My reply is that why spend time learning something I already know, besides it's hella expensive.
what a load of BS! what is this, another way for IL to gouge people even more? I can understand people who braid hair out of salons, but people who braid at home? you don't need to shell out thousands of dollars to do some dang extensions! I know children that can put braids in their doll's hair. plus, I don't see how on earth this can be regulated. a lot of this is word-of-mouth business w/ maybe a select few advertising via neighborhood flyers or, even rarer, sites like Craigslist. every girl that ever braided my hair was found via word of mouth
Its all about IL not getting a cut of the pay. There will always be backporch salons as long as there are hard times. Not everyone has hundreds of dollars to braid up. I think it should be more important that staff at make-up counters are trained and certified and retested every so often. There is actual disease risk there. Worst thing with braiding...line pull back? Which usually grows back if you stop braiding for awhile. And still...its not exactly the same problem as a disease.
