I've been coloring my hair since I was 21. I changed it to match the color of my horses.

My blond hair is getting greyer by the day, but I'm 71, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Dark blonde, here. At about 35, I would get a couple that would sprout up along my part...I'd notice about every couple of months if the light hit them right. Because I'm blonde and they are pure white, they don't look too distinguishable from highlights.

Fast forward to 41, and after I had my daughter last year, I noticed that most of my new growth is white...maybe all. It looks kind of cool. Trying to decide if I should leave it or not.

If you have really dark hair, those grays show up really fast. lol
Yes I have darker hair and color it and the grays start popping after about 2 weeks. I'm tired of coloring every 16 - 18 days so I'm thinking of spending more money than I should and going to a color specialist to see if they can do a blending in so I could wait at least a month between touch ups.

Around here you can plan on spending close to $200 for a cut and color from one of the high end places including the tip. Less at other places but I don't trust them to even do a solid color most of the time, so certainly I'm willing to pay for something that looks decent longer.

what age did your relatives start going gray? That can provide some clues.

My mom started going prematurely gray at age 16. She also had black hair & tons of it. I’ve never seen anybody whose hair grew as fast as hers did.

She said my grandpa’s hair had been white since as early as she could remember & she was born when he was in his 30’s.

She would never color it because of how fast it grew; she would literally have been doing touch ups every other week & she hated the way gray roots looked, so nope; no color.

I thought this was one of these "gray overnight" stories. Like this one:

BBC - Future - Can stress turn your hair grey overnight?

I know excessive stress made MY hair fall out so bad it ruined the vacuum.

It would probably be a good plan, to go ahead and get your hair done professionally. They use something that makes the hair shaft softer, which helps the gray hairs absorb and keep the color longer.

I used to do mine at home all the time, but it was turning into a losing proposition...the color not staying as long, fading too fast, etc.

So THEN I went to having it professionally done once a month. But yeah, it's expensive.

NOW, I'm back to doing it myself. But I DO believe there will come a point where I need to get it professionally done again. But I'm not there yet.

I'm thinking that if you got it done professionally, get the gray softened up, after getting it done once, you could probably go back to doing it yourself for like 6 or 7 months, instead of getting it done professionally every month.

I am still less than 5% gray but when you go from three of them to maybe 30 and it seems like it was overnight, it is a surprise, LOL.

And then just nothing...well, the human body does what the human body does.

I'm curious...did you get a new haircut, or style it different, or something like that?

My hair is very fine, and normal dye is a disaster for it. But I don't like the pale tones it has now, among just white. I tried and really like henna. I usually do red, and its an actual true red over chemical products. Its a bit messy but I love the result. Right after you do it its a bit brassy but matures to a beautiful red.

If the commercial dyes don't come out right, you might try henna. It also absorbs into the root of the hair and makes it far stronger and less likely to break off or splinter.
