My sister's wedding is in a few weeks and I want to color my hair. I used to go to an expensive salon before I decided to become a teacher and take a huge pay cut. For the past two years I have been dying my hair myself. It always turned out nicely until the last time (about 6 months ago). I bought the wrong color and my hair turned purple! It was awful. While I know which colors will work, I am still a bit nervous to do it myself again. I also don't want to deal with the mess as I am selling my house. The problem is, I still don't have the money to go back to the salon I trust. Should I try one of the discount chain places, such as Cost Cutters, or do I just go the budget way and do it myself? I will probably go to the discount place for the cut, since my hair is fairly easy to cut, but I'm torn on the coloring. I would love highlights again, and I won't do those myself. However, I don't know if I can trust a discount place for these. Does anyone have any suggestions, or good or bad experiences with these places? Thanks!

Sounds like a gamble to me. If you do it yourself you could mess it up. With a wedding to go to, you will have to pay double or more to get a professional to fix it. You can go to cost cutters and let someone you don't trust do it. Hey, it could turn out great, or it could turn out bad. Another gamble. If I were you, I would spend the money, and go to the expensive salon you trust. After all, it is your sister's wedding. It's summer time, go get those highlights!

Don't scrimp on the hair for your sister's wedding. It's too prominent. People may not consciously see your hair if it looks good but they will definitely notice if it looks bad. Remember, your hair is going to be in the wedding pictures, too, for everyone to see for years to come.

I definitely wouldn't try a new salon where you've never been before. Not with such an important event hanging in the balance.

Certainly you can find something else to scrimp on for the next few weeks so you can keep the upscale salon treatment in the budget. Have peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, for example. It's just for a few weeks so you can splurge on the hair.

Your sister will be the star for the day. You don't want your hair to upstage her .

Do you have a beauty college near you? We have an Aveda school and you can get professional coloring for a very reasonable price there.

P.S. Did you change brands of hair color when it turned out badly? I usually use L'Oreal which works great for me, but the two times I tried other brands (Clairol was one of them) the results were disastrous. If you have a brand that works stick with it.

We do have a beauty college, but I wouldn't trust them at all.

I always use L'Oreal too. I didn't use a different brand, just a color called Merlot. I should have realized that it would have purple tones, and with the natural red tones in my hair it wouldn't work. I was able to fix it myself by dying my hair a really dark brown, but it wasn't something I would want to do again.

I wish I could scrimp other places, but I am already doing that. We happen to be moving at the same time as the wedding, so everything is on a budget.

Too bad you don't have a good school like Aveda around you. I should've known that was too easy a solution. I'm sorry your budget is so tight. I know how difficult that can be because I'm a teacher and there have been years when I was living on change at the end of the month and I once saved my money for two years to buy a pair of black shoes. . . not lately, but that's something you don't forget. I think I'd do it myself with the L'Oreal color you know works for you and color it two weeks early. Then if things don't work right, for whatever reason, you have time to fix it. Best wishes!

It depend son what you're after. I usually go red in the winter, blonde in the summer. When I go red, you literally have to touch it up every six weeks which means you'll pay a fortune if you go to the Salon. So I get it done once by the salon and then I use Loreal Preference every six weeks after that in varying shade of red. I use one of those brushes that you get for applying hair color (at Sally's) and a bowl instead of the squeeze bottle so I get complete root to tip coverage. So far I havent' had a screw -up.

I'm going to go brunette in a couple of weeks as a 'farewell' to my darker hair before I go platinum in the fall. Of course, I'm not going to try the platinum myself...hee hee.
