Try using a color enhancing shampoo, they make the color last a little longer.

I called L'Oreal two years ago to inquire about their hair dyes. I used to use their Preference dye, but it was not covering all my gray. The customer service rep asked me a few questions about my hair and told me to try their Excellence hair dye. So I did, and have been using it ever since.

I also use L'Oreal Vibe Shampoo and Conditioner for color treated hair. It works great.

Once hair has been processed a lot, it becomes very porous and it is difficult for it to hold color. It is most obvious with fiery reds that turn brassy orange very quickly. A couple of other approaches you might try is to use a filler when you color (ask someone at Sally's for help with that), or consider switching to a demi color or even a semi. These will last about as long on over processed hair as permanent does without causing much additional damage. Also try picking up a keratin reconstructor, Ion makes a good one.

Get the color enhancing shampoo and conditioner from Sally's. It really helps--better than anything I've tried. The conditioner looks like chocolate mousse' and it smells like chocolate, too!

I didn't read all the posts () so this has probably already been suggested-- but an easy fix might be to adjust the color you are using to something closer to your natural color. If you are trying to cover grey not change your hair color then look for your natural color (take someone with you as it's sometimes hard to get the right color by yourself) then try that. Unless of course your grey is about 40% or more

Also some brands sell those root touch up kits- might be nice to have in between colors. Also if you go to a place like Sally beauty you can buy a bottle of color, a bottle of developer and just mix a small enough portion to cover the new outgrowth ( most are equal parts so 1 oz developer 1 oz color)
