My hair was so heavy it would take hours to dry on it's own naturally. After a period of oh 8 or so years of straightening and thinning when needed, my hair began to behave normally, even with it was wavy. My hair is wavy right now, and it looks normal, no more poofy problems and the last time I had my hair straightened was 3 years ago. Also use Pantene moisturizing shampoo, it's what I used and it seemed to help my hair behave a bit better then most shampoos. Also when I was drying my hair it helped, seemed to straighten it, but just had a ton of poof. If you are just totally against straightening at least get it thinned out. Also growing your hair out helps as well, helps weigh it down. My hair is long, currently, half way down my back or better.
Reps for this.

If I don't want my natural hair to look a fright, I have to straighten it w/ a flat iron. Works like a charm.

I can't recommend any certain shampoos or hair products since I've never found anything *magical* !

There's a really reasonably priced, yet priceless book, called The Curly Girl Handbook.

This is the BEST stuff out there!
I agree with this; find a Moroccan Oil, or some other type of similar hair product. Also, imo, you might actually find it easier to deal with if you grow it out long/longer.

Thick, strangely wavy, unruly hair?

I finally tamed mine.

How?

Buying quality shampoo.

10 years ago, I would have laughed in your face if you suggested I pay $$$$$ for shampoo.

Wrong.

Pureology for most washes.

My go-to for a perfect hair day:
Kerastase discipline for unruly hair

You just need a good curly hair specialist. Try naturallycurly.com - they used to keep a list of salon recommendations for every city. I found my hairdresser there.

I don't use any products and no one tries to sell them to me anymore, since I'm allergic to anything with fragrance.

OP did you ever try the moroccan oil product that the hairstylist recommended? You need to put some stuff in your hair IMO to smooth it out. Just conditioner won't work.
