I am thinking of joining the Reserves. I like that I can be part-time and still pursue schooling.

But...I don't know what to do with my hair when going to boot camp. I have big curly hair..."mixed girl hair" (I know its a horrible way to describe one's hair because mixed girls have all different types of texture). I believe I have 3B type hair.

Anyways how am I going to make a simple, neat hair style with my big curly hair? I don't want to use any chemicals (relaxer, texturizer) and I can't wash my hair everyday (bad for my hair). I doubt I can have time to straighten my hair because that alone is at least a two hour process.

Can I do braids? I don't know...any Black or mixed women here that can give me insider information on what I can do and what is appropriate hair styling (e.g. braids?).

If I do decide to do reserves and proceed to boot camp I just want to fit appropriate standards and have something manageable to work with.

Thanks!

I'm also a 3B with big, curly hair, if I let it airdry. What I do if I don't feel like being curly:
In the shower, I use a combination shampoo/conditioner (like Creme of Nature), and detangle my hair with my fingers while the product is still in my hair. I leave it on for about 5 minutes, then rinse (with water moving from hair to crown). I lightly towel dry, then quickly separate my hair into 6-8 pieces, depending on my laziness/tiredness. Using a moisturizer (Ultra Sheet; Creme Satin Press) I work it in, 1 section at a time, and comb the section with a very wide tooth (rounded-edged) comb. Then I do a 2 stranded twist for each section. Takes about an hour total, but I can make it last a month, as long as I re-comb and re-twist each section once a week. Best of all, if I want to wear my hair completely down for a nice occasion, I can untwist each section, and it looks like I have sections of long, wavy hair. If I need to keep my hair out of my way, I can put the braids in a low ponytail.

Just totally crop it. Its cleaner and safer (as long as you are not prone to your scalp burning from sun.)
