Hi! I may be moving to the area in the next month or so for work. The job is in Virginia Beach, with me needing to go to Suffolk once a week. I am coming from the Chicago area, so I have no idea what sort of price point I'm looking at when it comes to apartments in that area. I'm hoping to stay near Virginia Beach since most of my work days will be there.

I've been looking at apartment listings, but it's hard to tell where the "good" areas are and what I should be paying. I'm a single young female and safety is a top priority. While, I know that no area is 100% safe, I would like to avoid areas that are especially unsafe. Are there areas/apartments you would and would NOT recommend?

One of my biggest problems is that I don't know what I should expect to pay. I'm looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment where I can have my two relatively small dogs. Here in the Chicago suburbs, I'm looking at $900/mo at least for a one bedroom anywhere I'd want to live. And a 2 bedroom would be $1100 probably. What sort fo price point would I be looking at in Virginia Beach? I'm not looking for the most expensive, trendy place, but soemwhere mid-range. I've been looking at the ads, but I don't know if the prices I see are because that is the average price, or because that is a really crappy apartment or neighborhood.

Any comments on the commute from Virginia Beach to Suffolk? Again, I'm only going once a week, so it's not too bad, but I'd like to have an idea. Coming from this area, a 10 mile drive might take an hour with traffic!

Also, is Virginia Beach bicycle-friendly? Are there bike paths or forest preserves? Are the drivers used to cyclists on the roads or will I likely get run over?

Thanks for the help! I should know whether or not I'm moving there in another couple of weeks!

Wink Hope this helps

Honestly your best best is to try a search like the one below,(cut an paste)

You are the only one who can decide what you want an what you are willing to live with as far as price, type, amenities, area, commute, an such. the nice people on city data have a ton of knowledge to help you out but you may have to narrow it down a bit give some information as to exactly what you want an or a better suggestion is to do some of the search work yourself as far as picking a few out that sound good to you an post them to get a feed back as far as safety an if they know something about a certain apt.from the great people here it is easier for everyone an the knowledge base would be wider and more exact to get exactly the answers you will need to make an informed decision

I agree pick a complex, and then you'll get more information. Traffic here is bad at rush hour. From VAB to Suffolk depending on where in Suffolk you may be able to avoid the downtown/midtown tunnels saving yourself a lot of traffic mess. There are a lot of bike trails, and places to enjoy nature around here, but you should be careful (or you'll get ran over).

Hi there! The prices for apartments will be about the same as what you are paying now. It is pricey here! Traffic is a real nightmare here, I did NOT expect that when I moved here, so driving to Suffolk every day is going to take you about an hour from Virginia Beach. If you move closer to Suffolk (say in Chesapeake) rent will be a little lower. The best place to find an apartment in my opinion is on craigslist, there are lots on there. There ARE tons of apartment complexes if you are interested in that, but it's not your only option.

And about the bike issue? This is a terrible place to ride a bike on the roads. People stick to trails and paths which are great, but a bike is a dangerous way to get around in this area. To answer your question, I would say definitely NOT bike friendly. Too many multiple-lane roads and crazy traffic, no bike lanes for people to ride in.
