My husband is currently in the Navy and we are stationed in Charleston, SC right now. In Nov. we are suppose to be moing to VA and would like to look for a house. He is boat will be docked in the Navy Norfolk Shipyard, over by the Williboghby Beach area. We have a 19 month old daughter, so preschool info is great. If anyone could tell us of a good friendly neighborhood close to base, or the interestes for an easy communte, that would great, thanks!

I would suggest Lakewood, Larchmont or West Ghent. I live in a very nice area. There very rarely is a house for rent around here, but one just came up down the road. I would not want to drive in from Chesapeake though. There are too many great places much closer than that. The three I mentioned are fantastic, upscale family areas. I am VERY afraid of crime because I was brutely attacked while living in another state. When I settled here in Lakewood, it was after doing lots of research. I feel safe enough to go jogging late at night here. Trust me it's safe. So is Larchmont and West Ghent.

I'd recommend looking at Chesapeake or Kempsville in western Virginia Beach. Norfolk is problematic, it seems to be 3/4 ghetto and 1/4 extremely upper middle class neighborhoods (larchmont, ghent) . I have been told theres a few streets of middle and lower middle class houses here and there but hardly what you can consider a neighborhood from what I've seen. That's the problem with living in Norfolk, you can live in a million dollar mansion with a water view but be within 500 yards or 5 min drive from the ghetto.
