There are plenty of little "dive" places around that are actually more fun than some of the upscale establishments. I would stay away from "The Block" @ the Oceanfront though. Never really cared for that part of the beach. I always saw it as the equivalent to Waterside in Norfolk.... too many creepers.
Waterside has changed alot since you moved. The bars are going out if not out already. They should have never let them in except for the british pub upstairs. The stores and lower lever food court with the taffy/fudge making was always something families enjoyed.

Yeah, I was told that most of the Waterside bars/restaurants have since shut down. Hopefully they will tear it down and rebuild. That's a prime location for all types of businesses besides chain restaurants and gift shops.

I was never a fan of Waterside though growing up in HR.

I enjoyed the shops on the second floor. There was one in particular that had some unique gifts. I was disenchanted when the chains and bars moved in.

Was never a big fan of waterside myself. We visited a few times. I hope they do something good with the property. We could use some more jobs in the area regardless of what they are.

Too bad the Bayou is not still open on 19th street near the oceanfront. That place was very cool and had people in their 30's-40's there and very good music back in the day (1990's).
I also grew up in VB, and I liked Waterside. It was a cool place to see music and the Boathouse there always rocked!
I was sad when I returned to see once 'busy' waterside with all the cool shops and scene was quiet with almost nothing there beside the Sheraton Hotel.
When I visit VB I like visiting Chick's oyster Bar. You may like that place, as there is an older crowd and families there too.
