If it helps, pull up a map of Norfolk online and pan out. What's a good trip an hour or three westward? I don't mean NW up I-64 toward Richmond, and I don't mean south toward OBX. No, I definitely don't want to go to D.C.!

Smithfield? Franklin? Chippokes State Park?

Appomattox & Sheanandoah S.P. are a little too far for this trip. Just want to go see something cool and get out of this fishbowl for a few hours. I'm very eager to read your ideas!

Westward? Not sure, but you could go up the Eastern Shore to DE. They have casinos with recently introduced table games if that's of interest.

What are you in to?

Chippokes has a nice old plantation and some nice river views. It can be really hot out there!

If you like driving and history then you could take scenic State Route 10 through some old plantation areas and on to City Point in Hopewell and Petersburg National Battlefield Petersburg National Battlefield (U.S. National Park Service) and then check out the local art scene in Old Towne Petersburg VA - shop, dine, antique in quaint renovated area off I95 exit 52

Thanks, everyone.

I'm in my 30s, I'm into Americana, just for some background.

I went all the way around to w. Chesapeake to check out the mall area near the Western Branch, then through part of Suffolk and out to Isle of Wight. I stopped in Smithfield and they have a top notch visitors' bureau. Most businesses on Main close by 5 P.M., so best to get an early start. Numerous Civil War markers to check out. There was a park I wanted to get to called Windsor Place, but not enough time today. Took the ferry to Jamestown, my first time on a ferry. That was really cool. Brought a swimsuit just in case a swimmin' hole popped up, but no luck. Not sure if Smithfield is a place kids or young adults would enjoy, but I really did.
