How long is the boardwalk on Virginia Beach? My wife and I will be arriving for a visit on Aug. 23rd and like to jog on the boardwalk or beach early in the morning. Will the boardwalk be crowded with people in late August at 6:00-9:00 in the morning?

It's fairly long... an exact number, I don't know.

The "boardwalk" won't be crowded around those hours, but obviously the later you go out the more crowded it does become.

It's not a boardwalk in the sense of actual boards, it's a giant concrete sidewalk along the ocean.

It's just over 3 miles. Here's a link with info. It's not only a boardwalk, but it serves as a sea wall. That's why it's concrete.

So are the beaches directly across from the hotels crowded at the time of year that we will be there (Aug 23rd-27th)? Are there better less crowded beaches somewhere nearby? We will be staying at the Best Western near 29th St.. Is this a good area to lay on the beach? Will I be able to get some reading in or is the area going to be filled with noisey families and such. Nothing against noisey families you understand just hoping that most of the children will be back home getting ready to start school again.

You're a ways down from 17th where most of the action normally is. There is plenty of beach in your area and if you walk to the north part, it's even better. Mostly rental property with sunbathers and readers as well.

It will most likely still be packed around 29th that time of year. Most of the tourists are between 45th and 1st (Rudee Inlet), so if you're looking for a little more space and less noise on the beach, I'd head up Atlantic Avenue a-ways. It'll be mostly locals north of 45th Street, known as the "North End." I usually go someplace between 79th and 61st if I'm up that way. There's always other beaches in the city that are more secluded too, like Sandbridge and Chick's.

Yes, definately head up to the north end if you want some space on the sand. Maybe just 10 blocks will be enough but just check it out as you walk up if you don't mind walking that far depending on what you take with you. There will still be crowds until Labor Day. Can't avoid that. But running in the morning will not be a problem, the boardwalk is very wide. Enjoy your visit!
